Lunch With a Friend and The Meaning of Life

Hooked-up with a friend I hadn’t seen in a while today. And I’m very glad we had lunch together. You know, the lessons life unexpectedly throws our way can be absolutely amazing. She taught me one such lesson.Suzanne and I were in the same cohort throughout grad school. I’ll never forget that very first class, as sixteen of us gathered for what would be the first of many experiences together over the next two years. As I looked around the room I noticed a woman with a very stylish “crew-cut.” And I entertained the thought that the look could be the result of a medical situation. As our first semester continued, Suzanne, indeed, confirmed it was.Being in a graduate counseling program, every member of the cohort had their moment in the self-disclosure sun. Suzanne shared she’d recently had a benign tumor removed from her brain, followed by grueling physical therapy to get her walking again. And she endured a second procedure to insert a shunt in response to hydrocephalus. As she embarked upon her master’s work Suzanne had to confront some post-operative learning and memory issues that were a formidable barrier to her academic success. And with great resolve, she moved forward, graduating with the rest of us.But her medical challenges continued. Suzanne was diagnosed with breast cancer, and though the cancer presented in only one breast, she elected to have a double mastectomy. As we lunched, Suzanne provided an update on her medical situation; revealing some upsetting hearing loss, as well as vision issues. She also told me her memory and cognitive issues continued. Naturally, she wonders if her new symptoms suggest another brain tumor or, perhaps, a cancer relapse. But, in spite of it all, Suzanne’s outlook and spirit are remarkably positive and admirable.Always in search of any insight I can muster regarding the true meaning of life, I asked Suzanne how she justified getting up every morning. She simply said it was all about the pleasure of knowing a new day had arrived and a true appreciation for life and the opportunity to serve others. And it was very clear her medical situation had great impact upon her feelings. I shared with Suzanne the thoughts and feelings of a man I worked with several years ago. Marty presented for an assessment because he was experiencing a good deal of depression and wanted to understand its origin, as well as learn how to manage it. Well, in the midst of the assessment I stopped everything, looked at Marty and asked, “What is it that’s really gnawing at you?” Marty survived a ruptured aortic aneurysm earlier in the year. Of course, he knew he really ought to be dead. And that was the problem. He wasn’t. And he couldn’t understand why he didn’t feel a deep sense of gratitude for his good fortune. Marty couldn’t experience what he expected to be a true sense of wonder and purpose upon awakening each and every morning; the very joy Suzanne experiences. And his dilemma was wearing him down. So here are two people alike in their immediate life experience, yet vastly different in the take away. One finds a zest for life, and the other is frustrated he can’t. I believe this contrast is a call to action for each of us to ponder what this thing called life truly means. What’s really the point? And I’m thinking a good place to start is to consider how we’d respond were we in Suzanne’s and Marty’s shoes. Hmmm.  Yes, I’m glad Suzanne and I hooked-up today…

How to Overcome Stress, Stop Anxiety and Panic Attacks

We are all living in a very hectic world these days; it feels like the time is ticking away faster and faster. Works and family responsibilities are overwhelming us at times. Hence, it’s no surprise that stress and anxiety creep in our lives. Nobody could eliminate stress completely; what we could do however, is learn to control and manage stress before it takes control of our lives.Stress and anxiety are the major cause of panic attacks. If not dealt with, it can have a devastating effect on our life. Especially for people with A-type personalities, the perfectionism they seek in everything they do never quite measures up to their expectations. Please understand that no one is perfect; humans are all imperfect living in an imperfect world. Don’t stress it out and make yourself crazy, just take it all in your stride. There are many different ways to deal with stress; just some simple exercises can help stop the onslaught of stress. For example, just focus on breathing properly can take away the anxiety from your mind and bring you back to a calm state. Anytime when you feel stress, put your left hand on your stomach and start to breathe deeply and slowly; you should feel that your stomach expands when you breathe in air; that’s the right way to breathe.Going outside for some fresh air can also help. Walking or running for 20 minutes can release endorphins which help relieve stress. Listening to classical music also helps as it lowers the blood pressure, and brings calm within.Sometimes, however, stress reveals itself in other ways. Fear, feelings of presssure, inability to focus and palpitations; all these are symptoms of stress that can lead to anxiety, panic attacks, and the fright or flight syndrome.  For example, you are fearful when speaking in front of a group of people; anxious when a plane’s taking off; nervous during your wedding day, etc. There is really no absolute cure for fear and anxiety. To overcome it, you will have to face your fear; admit that you are fearful, seek to understand it, and do the right thing anyway. Develop faith that you will eventually conquer your fear and anxiety. If stress is getting you down, examine the cause. Determine the origin, talk to a friend or discuss it with a professional or a loved one. Stress, if not acted upon, can cause serious health problems. Learn to live and cope with it at all costs, if you can. Remember that there is no such thing as “stress-free” life as stress is always around us; unless of course if we are already dead. As long as we are still breathing, we’re susceptible to stress and anxiety. What we can do however, is to develop a “stress-proof” life. There are many successful self-help techniques you can learn to stop anxiety and panic attacks on its track.

Relieving Anxiety Disorders In Children

Anxiety disorders can be extremely distressing for anyone who experiences them, and this is particularly true when anxiety strikes children and adolescents. Children and adolescents with anxiety disorders will commonly experience any number of specific symptoms, but they often have difficulty explaining the way they feel to their parents, teachers and other caregivers.  Irrational fear and worry is the chief intrinsic symptom, but without any explainable basis for this fear, children may be reluctant to voice their discomfort.  Fortunately, there are outward signs that adult caregivers can look for which may indicate the onset of a panic and anxiety disorder and signal the need for treatment.  Among these symptoms are:

Studies show that 1 out of every 10 children and teens will experience some form of problem anxiety.  These disorders, however, are not all the same.  Among the several different types of anxiety disorders are:

Relieving anxiety disorder in children can be a long and arduous task, but there is help available.  Besides prescription medication which can significantly help reduce the severity of symptoms, all of the following treatment steps can also be looked into:

If left untreated, children with panic and anxiety disorder will often have a difficult time expressing themselves and may even feel guilty for the trouble they are causing.  They feel “different” and will often shy away from interactions with their peers and adults alike.  What they need most of all is someone who will listen to them without judgment and assure them that everything will soon be okay.

Overcoming Stress for a Peaceful Life

In today’s busy world almost everyone has stress in their lives. We are faced with stress in our lives from so many different areas. Not only do we have to deal with the usual stresses of work and home, but we are faced with environmental stressors as well.  We deal with traffic, street noise, and technology such as television, computers and phones, not to mention the fact that we are surrounded by artificial light day and night. Is it any wonder we feel edgy and overwhelmed?Even if you don’t realize it, your body begins to crave peace and quiet when faced with stressful situations. We need to recharge and revitalize so we can deal with the daily stress we face. If we don’t take the time to relieve stress and anxiety in our lives, we may be faced with depression, anxiety or physical illness.  By practicing stress management techniques we can prevent stress from building up and causing an emotional breakdown or a chronic disease.  There are many different types of stress management techniques that can be used to overcome the stress that we face. Some ways of dealing with stress can be as simple as stopping or overcoming the cause of the stress, being more assertive, or stepping away from the situation all together.  Much of the stress that we face comes from our jobs. There are two main causes of workplace stress: the job itself and the people we work with. Pressures at work can included difficult tasks that seem overwhelming, looming deadlines, and not having enough time to accomplish the work we need to do. Although workplace stress cannot always be avoided, it can be managed. If you find yourself constantly being interrupted while trying to accomplish tasks, see if you can alter your work schedule so you can work when there are fewer people in the office. If this isn’t possible, use time management techniques to arrange to complex tasks during the least stressful time of your workday.  We all have to deal with difficult people and in the work place this is a great cause of stress. Co-workers and uptight bosses can be a source of stress as well as upset customers. By learning to be more assertive you can voice your concerns without coming across as being aggressive or threatening. If necessary, find a book or an assertiveness training course that will help you to learn to set defined boundaries. By having boundaries and letting people know when they cross them you will free yourself from unneeded emotional stress caused by dealing with difficult people. Assertiveness techniques can also help with stressful family relationships as well.  Other techniques to help relieve workplace stress are simple things such as taking regular breaks, creating a clean and pleasant workspace, and having a definite starting and ending time to your day. Allowing time for an uninterrupted break helps you to recharge and go back to your work with a fresh outlook. A short 15 minute break can do wonders for your productivity. Also, if your work area is a place you feel comfortable and enjoy being, your quality of work will increase.  It is amazing how small changes such as these can reduce your work related stress. One of the best ways to deal with stress is to develop a positive attitude.  Remember that no one has a perfect life and that stressful situations happen to everyone. If you have the attitude that this too shall pass, you are freeing yourself from unnecessary anxiety and worry. We all have storms to weather, but we can learn to ride out the storm rather than be consumed by it. There is no cure all for stress and unfortunately stress will always be a part of our lives. But by learning to change our thinking from negative to positive, becoming more assertive, practicing time management skills and finding the good around us we will see that life is great. You can overcome stress and find the peace and contentment you desire.

It’s your Life. are you Having Fun?

So often, we get busy with our day to day lives and don’t step back to look at the big picture. Are you enjoying life? Or does life feel like a struggle? Do you wake each day thinking, “Today I have to…”” or do you wake thinking, “Today I get to…” There is a big difference.

I recently coached a client most people would describe as successful. Married with two children, Christina* worked as a registered nurse supervisor. She lives in a nice neighborhood, drives a late model SUV, and recently traveled to Hawaii with her family.

But, Christina felt unhappy. She did not enjoy her work anymore. She liked her co-workers and she received plenty of recognition for her efforts at work. But, she felt something missing.

Christina’s job was the end result of a series of choices Christina made over the last fifteen years.

When faced with an opportunity, Christina always made the most “sensible” choice. Her series of sensible choices landed her in an “okay” job and an “okay” life. But, many days, she came home feeling depleted. Her job drained her energy. Some days, she did not want to go to work. Many days, she had a gnawing voice telling her something was missing from her life. Many days, she woke up thinking, “Today, I have to…”

When Christina came to coaching, we had an honest conversation about what Christina really wanted. What a powerful conversation!

For the first time in years, Christina gave herself permission to dream. Although she liked being a nurse, it was not her first career choice. Highly creative, with an entrepreneurial spirit, Christina felt boxed in by the structure of her job. She really wanted to start her own business.

For the first time in her life, Christina made a choice many might consider to be “un-sensible.” Christina decided to start her own business as a wedding planner.

Christina did not do this hastily. She spent months learning about business, researching the market in her area, talking to other small business owners and developing a solid back-up plan in case her business failed. She did all of this while she continued to work in her nursing job.

In the process, something amazing happened!

In spite of taking on even more work as she developed her business and worked full-time, Christina felt excited and energized. She woke up each morning looking forward to the day ahead. Maybe that day she would have lunch with another business owner. Or, maybe she would spend time working on her business plan after her children went to bed. It really didn’t matter how much time Christina devoted to her business on a given day. Christina got to do something everyday that excited her.

By the time Christina walked away from her steady paycheck, she had so much momentum going, fear no longer consumed her. Even though Christina faced plenty of obstacles and financial risk as she developed her business, she persisted. It did not take long before Christina made more money from her business in one week than she made from a month working as a nurse.

Christina’s success is not effortless. She works very hard at it. But, to Christina, it feels effortless. Christina loves what she does each day. She is pursuing her passion.

Did you wake this morning thinking, “Today, I get to…” or did you wake thinking, “Today, I have to…?” Those two thoughts highlight the difference between thriving and surviving. When you wake thinking, “I get to…,” you’re having fun in your life and work. You’re experiencing each day as a new opportunity to get to do what you love. Work can be fun and when it is, you thrive.

It’s your life. Are you having fun?

Life Style Coaching Transforms your Resolutions Into Evolutions

Life Style Coaching is a powerful approach in assisting you in changing direction and implementing behaviour changes which will produce new outcomes.

Exhausted and depressed all the time? Life Style Coaching can provide you with the answers on How to overcome this.

Frustrated and feeling that you are not getting anywhere? That’s where the Life Style Coaching can provide you the solutions you have been searching for.

When you are not satisfied with the results you are producing, then you want to change. However so often when you make new resolutions, after a while you are back to the old patterns again.

When you implement the Evolution approach you will create new, supportive behaviours and this will create new, desired outcomes.

You will become more aware about strengths rather than focusing upon your weakness. The focus upon the weakness or incompetence is a worldwide phenomenon.

Trying to fix something all the time, rather than having the focus upon your strong qualities.

There seems to be a worldwide obsession to fix what’s wrong.

Sometime we are so caught up in it that it hard to recognize. That’s where the Life Style Coaching comes in.

Einstein said,” The current problems we face cannot be solved at the same level of thinking with which they were created.”

Would you think in the same way when you were 16 years old or when you are 40 years old? No of course not.

“The world hates change. Yet it is the only thing that brought progress.” -Charles F. Kettering.

Some of the most common reactions to and defences against making changes are the following:

* Fear, we want the 100% guarantee that nothing will go wrong!!

* Perfectionism; the thought of failure could destroy their perfect image and /or ability to cope.

* Low Self Image: People who suffer from a low self image will do anything to hold on to. So they can continue to keep on punishing themselves and consequently others.

They want to convince themselves and the world that they are absolutely undeserving of being loved

* Stubbornness: These are the control freaks. They have a fierce sense of independence and will not allow anyone to ‘tell them’ how to live their lives…

It is interesting to realize that they are not in control of their live at all. The opposite is true.

* Learned Victimization: Helplessness is their watchword. They rather keep on given up that risking a potentially more successful approach.

Life Style Coaching is not for every one.

It is designed for those people who are ready to change their behaviours , so they can start to create different outcomes.

Life Style Coaching is a two way street, since you want solutions and when you are being given steps to take, then YOU need to take the responsibility and being accountable.

You will be given steps on HOW TO replace those un-resourceful beliefs and behaviours and replace them with those ones who will create the reality you DO desire.

It is interesting to begin to realize when reality is feeding back to you where you are at. Life is holding a mirror in front of you all the time.

Through an increased conscious awareness, you can choose to let go those beliefs and behaviours which are no longer supportive of where you would like to go.

A good metaphor is, when you step inside your car, and you have a navigator, the navigator will ask you “Where would you like to go?”

And then you punch in the destination and it starts to give you the guidance.

This process would take a lot of stress out of your life. You take the action and follow the steps.

Coaching for Life

The social thinking is

People are social beings, each living their lives in society and the presence of others. It is not known that a man can live in his own, without even less a human being. Any person, the social as it is, interacts with the people he comes into contact.

The normal process of learning would be for each person to give something, an idea that a practice, an ideology, a philosophy, or the mere absence of the learning experience for the other to start the search for answers to a proper integration into the self.

Throughout the life of a human being, he will be able to share and by which, together with others. The influences subtly change it to a person in what he is during the present is what he coaching for the lives of those he was with.

Coaching for life is quite easy to understand. It is the way an individual personality, an effect with the people in his environment. The closer they are physically, socially and is probably a greater and so the transfer would have a major change in the attitude and behaviour.

Although not necessarily outrageous in the sense that it overshadowed another person, the fundamental problem, it differs and moves a person’s behaviour. It is a two-way process for the people involved and a two-way process on the individual.

The two paired way process

Coaching for life could lead to either positive or negative results to the other individual. The same applies to the same person by the people around him. Depending on what still influential, and a specific way of thinking is the subject of a wide range of possible results in terms of world outlook, attitude and philosophy in life.

Morality is only a complementary role in determining what kind of person derives from the many interactions he can throughout his life.

Like a River run dry, no new rainfall will definitely fill up the dry river bed, but the water would fill that the river bed can be murky because of the accumulated dirt, if they dried. Over time, water from the mountains, filtered and cleaned will begin to replace the muddy water once occupied.

Our characters are similar to the dry river bed. We are always an empty vessel in constant need for social interaction and quality of character education, depends on the people, the “water” that would fill us. Coaching for life is an essential part of the residence of humans, the ability to think, feel, reason and take action with the events that come our way.

It never ends

Even those who have died physically immortalized their philosophies, and of these have been affected deeply. Coaching for life may extend over the grave by the aftermath of these dead people leave that other ideas. A classic example would be the teachings of the faith through Jesus Christ, Mohammed, Buddha, religious and similar facilities on their trailers.

Several hundreds, perhaps thousands of years have already passed, and yet their words and teachings are still kept as a guide for spiritual growth and personal satisfaction.

Coaching for life for these personalities were immortalized on such large scale because of their impact on the people accept their philosophies and beliefs as their own.

Let your destiny manifest itself to attain life Success

What drives you? What is it that defines your entire persona? What are you living for?

Unfortunately, most people have are way ward of the very purpose they exist. Can you remember those days of your youthful exuberance when you undoubtedly believe you can achieve anything? Filled with unfathomable enthusiasm and driven with a determined resolution.

Sadly for most those days are long gone, they are the ghost of their former selves. Battered and beaten by the ravages of stress from work, society and life itself. So many haven’t dreamed in for so long that they actually don’t know what they want any longer! Don’t you think it’s time to stir up that dream inside of you? Your dreams and your destiny are not determined by “CHANCE” but by “CHOICE” It is solely your Decision.

The life you have now is the result in direct correlation to the Choices you’ve made in the past. But, sometimes you are hindered and stuck in mediocrity because you were afraid to make a sound Decision. You are just flowing along the stream that forces of nature roll you along. The kind of cavalier “Que Sera Sera” attitude is not only inexplicable it’s repulsive and inexcusable. Isn’t it time you got involved with your own life? Isn’t it time to start living through your own Decisions and take responsibility for your actions, be it the Choices you make in your life.

It’s your life, live it the way you see fit. It is a concept so simple yet people indignantly miss it therefore missing out how prolific it really is!

I believe that you can attain anything in life if you act on it and persevere to achieve it regardless the hindrances looming over. It’s your Decision, it is your Choice!

Quoting from Lewis Carrol’s Alice in Wonderland… Alice asked the cat, “Would you please tell me, which way I ought to go from here?” The cat answered, “That depends a great deal on where you are heading to.” Alice exclaimed, “Oh, I don’t much care.” “Then it really doesn’t matter which way you go, the cat remarked poignantly.

What are you trying to accomplish with your life? What do you want to attain? It’s your Choice, you are in direct control. Take responsibility for your actions and refrain from blaming others for your failures! Make a sound judgment for your Decisions, start by getting serious and get going! Life goes on, with or without you!

Here is an inspiring quote by Eleanor Roosevelt, “The future belongs to those who believe in the beauty of their dreams.” Never let anybody steal your dream or vision!

You need to make a Decision! Don’t go on through life idly staving away when there is boatload of opportunity in front of you. It is much easier to make a course correction that it is to get started! It takes careful planning and solid preparation with corrections on the side. But before they can do that they had to make a Decision to take off first.

How do you process a Decision?

It is vitally important to grasps all the concepts. Never make 100% assumptions while only having 10% facts. It is illogical and impractical, you need to consider various solutions and objectively evaluate their consequences. Weighing the best and worst case scenarios, and then make sure that the Decision is congruent with your Goals, Plans and Mission statement. Lastly you must always effectively convey your judgment to your support team.

An ideal support team would be your family members, close friends, relatives who are helping out your cause, refrain from consulting with those who are dragging down.

Remember you are the architect of your life. You must be willing and able to make Choices. Your destiny is determined by Choice not by chance!
